If like myself, you have been reading eBooks for years, you see that the iPad’s main feature is it’s eBook reader facility and for downloading eBooks. So as an iPad user you can keep all of you favourite book, eBooks, all in one place. This is really cool, as trying to read your eBooks on your laptop or desktop computer is great until you have to travel somewhere.

The launch if the Apple iPad has seen the roll out of there new iBooks app which is used together with the iPad for purchasing and downloading eBooks. All you have to do is browse or find a specific iBook you want then pay a fee for that eBook.

The iBooks reader for the Apple iPad gives you the visuals of actually picking a book from a bookcase. You get the sense of depth and with the two page view, you also get the feeling of reading a real book. This is the main reason the iPad is in huge demand.

Initially people thought that the iPad would make convert a lot of the kindle readers and also kill off the eBook industry all together. It hasn’t and that may be due to the cost of the iBook reader for the eBooks as you pay around /14.99 per book.

There are not many alternative eBook readers for the Apple iPad and iPad users will probably find themselves mainly browsing the iBookstore for their choices.

Hope is not lost, though, as there are some companies making a more cost effective eBook reader available to you. iPad users can become a member of an awesome multimedia service that specialises in eBooks, Comic Books, Novels, live Newspapers, music and loads more. With a one off payment and no monthly fee, iPad owners can download unlimited eBooks to there hearts content. Plus this also works for your iPod, iPod Touch, Kindle, PC and Mac.

It’s About Time! OpenShot 1.2.2 Released!

Posted by myjiemeng - February 18th, 2011

I am proud to announce the immediate availability of OpenShot version 1.2.2! We have been hard at work on this version since April 2010. While a 5 month long release cycle was not really what I had planned on, I’m happy to see this version finally get released!
Round of Applause
Before I give you a run down of the new features, I want to take a moment to thank all the great and talented people who stay up late with me working on this project. Andy Finch has been helping me since the very first days of OpenShot, and without his help, OpenShot would probably not be here today. Olivier Girard is one of the biggest promoters of OpenShot, writing articles, assisting new users, and was the primary contributor to the awesome OpenShot help manual. Maël Lavault has been a huge help on LaunchPad, answering questions, submitting patches, and was a huge help on this latest version. To all the people who have helped me, THANK YOU SO MUCH for making OpenShot the great application it is today!

Getting Started
Now, let’s talk a bit about version 1.2.2. Where did 1.2.0 & 1.2.1 go? Why did we skip straight to 1.2.2. Well my friends, that is an interesting story, but one for another day. Just know that 1.2.2 is the official release, and it’s awesome! I might be a little biased, but seriously, this is a really great release.

Video Highlights
As is tradition, I have used OpenShot to create a short video showcasing some of the new features. I mixed in some great overly dramatic music, and a few screen-casts to create a true masterpiece. Okay, I admit, the video is not quite a masterpiece, but if I said that, nobody would watch it.

OpenShot 1.2 Highlights from Jonathan Thomas on Vimeo.

New Features:

  • Improved Stability
  • 3D Animated Titles (powered by Blender 2.5)
  • Custom Transitions
  • New Audio & Video Effects
  • Time-line Improvements / Animations
  • Improved Effects User Interface
  • Improved Theme Engine (New netbook friendly theme)
  • Razor Improvements (now supports snapping to play-head)
  • Improved Language Support (Rotate effect now works in all locales)
  • New DVD Export (Create compliant DVD images)
  • Improved Preferences Dialog
  • Improved Exporting of different frame-rates
  • Numerous Bug Fixes

Let me dive into more depth on a few of these new features, and provide some screen-shots for your viewing pleasure.

3D Animated Titles

We have taken the power of Blender, some really cool animated title templates, and mixed them together with the simple and user-friendly style of OpenShot to create a truly unique feature. Everyone can now enjoy creating their own animated title sequences! Of course, none of this would be possible without the great Blender open-source 3D animation package! Colin Levy, the director of Sintel, even contributed a slick title animation to OpenShot! Blender has so many good features, but most are difficult for the average user to tap into. I hope that we can expand this relationship even further in future releases.

[click for larger image]
New Audio & Video Effects

Many new effects have been added to this release. However, a few effects had to be removed, due to crashes and instability on some systems. We replaced the missing effects with even cooler ones, so no tears. My favorite new effect is called Chroma Hold. This effect turns your video into grayscale except for 1 color. I’ve seen this effect used on TV commercials many times, and now we can all use it!

[click for larger image]

Timeline Improvements & Animations
We have added lots of polish and some subtle animations to all clip and transition movement, which is easier for the eye to follow. For example, clips that are not placed in a valid spot, smoothly (but quickly) animate back to their correct location. Clips that are removed animate into a dot and disappear. Same for transitions.

Improved Theme Engine (Netbook friendly theme)
The code that draws the time-line and buttons (our theme engine) has been drastically improved. Now theme artists can not only change the images, but the height, width, offset, position, alpha, and color of items. In theory, almost any video editor interface can now be created… assuming some artists want to jump in and help out. Also, a new theme was designed for netbook screens, taking advantage of the new theme engine.

GTK 2.18 Required
Okay, so what does this mean? In Ubuntu terminology, you must have Ubuntu 9.10 or greater to run this version of OpenShot. The glade library (which we previously used to display our interface) has been depreciated, and so we moved onto just using the GTK library. Many of the GTK features we are now using only work on GTK 2.18+, so with the assumption that most users are on 9.10 of Ubuntu (or greater), we decided it was not worth the effort to back-port to previous version of Ubuntu. However, it is possible (in theory) to adapt OpenShot to Ubuntu 9.04, but that’s about as far back as possible, without recompiling GTK… and who wants to do that. =)

Download Today
The OpenShot PPA is the easiest way to install (and stay updated). It works on Ubuntu 9.10 and greater. Just follow the easy instructions, and enjoy! However, if you would rather download the DEB installers, you can do that as well.

Fun Fact
Did you know that in Kerala, India, a high-school textbook is including a chapter on OpenShot to be taught at all the schools in their city? How cool is that!

Conclusion
Thanks again to all the blog readers, users, supporters, translators, programmers, artists, directors, packagers, donors, and of course to my wife, Cindy, who allows me the time to work on this project.

Download OpenShot today and create some amazing videos… just be sure to tag your videos on YouTube as “Created with OpenShot, Yo!”. Okay, you can leave off that last part, and just include “Created with OpenShot”.

Mac Recovery Solutions to Recover the Data From the Startup Issues

Posted by myjiemeng - February 14th, 2011

For years, the Macintosh operating system has always been appreciated for its cutting edge technology and reliability. For its superior internal architecture and technology, Apple based Mac computers are believed to be flawless. However, being part of the technology world and observing things closely, you must have realized that errors can occur in every application. In Mac, sometimes the booting process halts in the middle and thereafter, the same thing happens each time you start-up the computer making data in the drive inaccessible. Under such situation, your valuable data can only be recovered through any Mac recovery software.

Problems at the start-up usually happen after an unsystematic shut down following a file system corruption, virus/malware infection, power surge or any other software/hardware failure.

Mac OS X comes loaded with certain utilities to fix such errors or corruption, namely Disk Utility and FSCK. Both the utilities are quite handy in detecting the errors and repair them thereafter. If you are using Mac OS X version 10.4 or later, it is recommended to use Disk Utility instead of FSCK, as the Disk Utility has been advanced over its predecessors and includes the features of FSCK also.

Usually, Disk Utility fixes the issues related to file system corruption with ease and the following steps will guide you through the process:

Try inserting the system disk, that had come with your Mac OS X and restart. At the startup, from the installer menu, choose the Disk Utility.

Select the tab named First Aid and choose your hard drive icon.

Lastly, select your troubled Mac volume and click on the button, Repair.

Mostly, Disk Utility resolves such issues, however, if it fails or if the system couldn’t be booted-up, only way to fix the above errors is to format and make fresh installation of the OS. However, formatting will take all your valuable data away and restoration of of the same can be from the valid backup. Failing to restore data from the backup server, look around for any specialized Mac startup error recovery utility to recover the data back.

Mac recovery software are one of the advanced inventions of the recent time, which are capable of recovering your lost, deleted, formatted or inaccessible data from any Mac OS X based systems. These software are beautifully designed to provide stepwise instructions, that can be immensely useful for the users who don’t have much technical knowledge.

Meerkat to Include OpenShot 1.2.2!

Posted by myjiemeng - February 14th, 2011

Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat) has approved our freeze exception request, and will be including OpenShot 1.2.2 (the newest release) when it launches on October 10, 2010.
If you have the beta of Maverick, you can find version 1.2.2 already in the Ubuntu Software Center!
Strangely, the software center has truncated one of our bullet points in the description (i.e. “Videand”). You can check it out on the screenshot here. I guess I’ll file a bug about this one. =)

Reintroducing the iPod Classic

Posted by myjiemeng - February 13th, 2011

When Apple released the iPod in 2003, they forever changed the way people listen to music on the go. Almost immediately, the MP3 player eradicated portable CD players as the optimum choice for mobile music, with its incredibly storage capacity, ease of use, and high quality sound. In the years since then, the iPod has been redesigned several times, and several rival MP3 players have been released to compete, but the original iPod (now known as the iPod classic) remains the gold standard for portable MP3 players.

The new generation of the iPod Classic was recently released, and it’s notable for its complete lack of features. This is not an oversight or undersell, but seems to be designed to appeal solely to those who want nothing more from their MP3 player than the ability to play MP3s.

This goes back to one of the reasons for the iPod Classic’s continued popularity; its rather simple functionality. As iPods have been getting more sophisticated in recent years, Apple has been consistently adding new features, such as a touch screen, camera, and the ability to record videos. While there are certainly technophiles out there who praise the advent of such features, in today’s smart phone world, they may seem a bit redundant. After all, the average cell phone now has a camera and can record and play videos with ease. Why would one need a second device that can do the same thing? It seems to make sense that the average consumer for an iPod is buying it purely for its music playing capabilities and little else. Any additional features available on the iPod seem frivolous, and might only be purchased by an ordinary consumer as an impulse buy. The iPod Touch is the more gadget-oriented model, but might seem to be Apple competing with themselves. Since many of its features can be found on the Apple iPhone, it makes more sense to go with that device, since it comes with a host of extra features as well.

Furthermore, the iPod Nano, the smaller model in terms of both its size and storage capacity, also has remained a popular choice in recent years. The iPod Nano, is purely a smaller version of the iPod classic, but is also cheaper, making it an economical purchase for those who cannot afford the classic or more advanced model. And yet, the iPod Classic continues to sell well, since the consumers have voted with their wallets that a device that solely plays MP3s and can hold 160 GBs worth is all people want.

Even though modern phones can also play music as well, the massive storage capacity, accessibility of the iTunes store, and superior sound quality continue to make the iPod Classic a popular choice for consumers.

Hope Is Fading – Orphan Sunday: Animation

Posted by myjiemeng - February 2nd, 2011

This is such a great video! Not only do I have a heart for the orphan but I just love the way this animated short was made. This powerful three minute video promo for Orphan Sunday shares the story of a young girl waiting in an orphanage, hoping someone will come and choose her. This was a very creative way to promote a cause.

Regardless of your work’s artistic quality, the story can help to overcome issues of anatomy, perspective, FX, etc. Of course, most indie animators want something that looks visually stunning and eye-catching. However, many animations have been made with lower quality or simplistic artwork because of time restrictions or budget. These animations were successful in telling a story which still resulted in the desired effect.

Allan Rosenow’s artistic direction adds drama to the already heart-breaking subject. In a post, he states that he used Toon Boom Animate for the animations, he painted the backgrounds in Corel Painter, the camera moves and lighting were done in Adobe After Effects and he recorded the music in Logic Express.

I must say that his mastery of these applications is outstanding. As artists and animators, our goal must always be to get projects done. How many of us have unfinished works that we either lost interest in or “we made them too big” to accomplish? This file is short and to the point. I’m sure it still took several hours to complete and a lot of concentration and dedication. This project could be an example to us all.
